Gradients, Species Richness and Communities in Eastern Finnish Sloping Fens

چکیده
In Scandinavia, three gradients (poor–rich, water table, margin–expanse) are considered in vegetation classification of mires. We re-analysed the data Paavo Havas from 1961 on sloping fens eastern Finland using NMDS ordination analysis, which also revealed a three-dimensional structure classic gradients, with poor–rich gradient associated pH. Water table level, and unstable–stable regime were importance. Our analysis confirmed interpretation by but further stressed role as main direction variation fens. Species richness increased pH, mire expanse to margin vegetation, decreased towards too wet or seasonally dry conditions. Eastern Finnish sloping-fen plant communities resemble those elsewhere montane-subalpine-alpine central southeastern Europe.

Elevational Gradients in Species Richness
The abiotic and biotic gradients on mountains have enormous potential to improve our understanding of species distributions, species richness patterns and conservation. Here we describe how abiotic factors change with elevation, how flora and fauna respond to these changes and how elevational species richness patterns have been studied to uncover drivers of biodiversity. There are four main tre...
متن کاملCauses of Latitudinal Gradients in Species Richness: a Test with Fishes of the Tropical Eastern Pacific
Recent advances in analytical methods and exploration of regional diversity patterns in greater depth than simple whole-fauna patterns may change our understanding of the determinants of latitudinal gradients in species richness. Using a comprehensive database on the geographical distributions of the large fauna of endemic shorefishes from the Tropical Eastern Pacific (TEP), we delineated latit...
متن کاملAmphibian species richness across environmental gradients
Large-scale field patterns are a fundamental source of inferences on processes responsible for variation in species richness among habitats. We examined species richness of larval amphibian communities in 37 ponds over seven years on the Univ. of Michigan’s E. S. George Reserve. Ordination of the community incidence matrix indicated a strong major axis of variation in species associations that ...
متن کاملLarge-scale species-richness gradients in the Atlantic Ocean.
The increase in species richness from the poles to the Equator has been observed in numerous terrestrial and aquatic taxa. A number of different hypotheses have been put forward as explanations for this trend, e.g. area and energy availability. However, whether these hypotheses apply to large spatial scales in marine environments remains unclear. The present study shows a clear latitudinal grad...

1. Patterns of species richness often correlate strongly with measures of energy. The more individuals hypothesis (MIH) proposes that this relationship is facilitated by greater resources supporting larger populations, which are less likely to become extinct. Hence, the MIH predicts that community abundance and species richness will be positively related. 2. Recently, Buckley & Jetz (2010, Jour...
